Per Jim Callis of MLB.com, Flora has signed with the Giants for $7.9975M. With a bonus slot of $8.9884, the Giants have bonus slot left over of $990,900.

These savings are how teams in the draft accumulate allowed slot money to sign other prospects later in the draft. That’s how they signed Trevor McDonald and Kyle Harrison, by saving slot money signing other picks. They will also save slot money from other picks where they selected college seniors, of which, per a Google search, there were 12 college seniors drafted, saving almost the whole allowed slot money because they sign for minimal bonus slot, as college seniors have little leverage.
But for this post, I’m just looking at the savings from signing Flora. Together with the 5% overage allowed (teams are allowed to go 5% over slot overall; going beyond 5% teams get penalized by losing draft picks), which amounts to $867,500, that’s roughly $1.85M that they can now spend on latter picks.
There are a number of draftees who will likely require more bonus to sign with the Giants, from what I’ve been reading, as well as knowing from past drafts, that HS draftees require more than slot.
- Carson Bolemon (#29 pick, first round pick)
- Kaden Waechter (second round pick)
- Charles Bussey III (11th round pick)
- Josiah Kemp (12th round pick)
- Dalton Wentz (16th round)
Per Jim Callis, Peyton Bonds signed for slot: https://x.com/jimcallismlb/status/2078885007297249388?s=46&t=tVefIpwhKsXrC0LLDZfilg
ReplyDeleteGot a tweet that the 6th rounder, Eric Nachtsheim signed.

Justice Delos Santos tweeted that 13th rounder, Colin Fisher, signed for $300K, $150K over the allowed, taking away $150K of slot savings.
ReplyDeleteGiants doing fast work: the first 13 round picks, except Bolemon and Waechter, oh, and Martinez, have signed with the Giants, including Josiah Kemp, the high schooler picked in the 12th round. Also, the 17th rounder.

This mostly makes sense, many were college seniors just happy to be selected and given a chance, the Giants were saving a lot of slot space to sign Bolemon and Waechter. They must be pretty close to signing the three because the Giants already went over slot $150K unexpectedly for the 13th pick, and it was reported by many analysts that Kemp would also require over slot money.
But it is a bit unnerving that Martinez hasn’t signed yet, he was over drafted (118 but many didn’t rank him Top 250), likely to save money, but maybe they didn’t work that out with him beforehand, and he wants slot. That happened with with Mac Williamson a while back and he held on to get full slot, and the Giants had no slot money left for HS players picked in the later rounds. Martinez hopefully will not cost us getting Bolemon and Waechter.
