2010 Giants Third Round Pick: Carter Jurica

Carter Jurica is an unknown/unheralded SS with Kansas State University.  BA, tweeted Baggarly, "had Jurica as a 7-10 round pick.  No standout tools; range might be fringy for pro SS."  That sounds like a 2B then.

This link has about all the info I can find on him regarding the draft:

35. Carter Jurica - KSU
3-17 from: - http://baseballdraftreport.com - JR SS Carter Jurica (Kansas State): 5-9, HR, 2B, 2 BB, SB, 4 RBI, 3 R in doubleheader - In a weak college shortstop class, Carter Jurica should see his stock soar this spring. He has always had the right tools to succeed (plus speed, enough pop, good athlete), but has put everything together in a big way so far this season.
3-24 from: - http://baseballdraftreport.com - Kansas State JR SS Carter Jurica - Height, Weight: 5-11, 185 - Birth Date: 9/23/88 (Age-21 season) - FR – .240/.329/.360 (15 BB/23 K; 9-14 SB) - SO – .353/.437/.492 (26 BB/45 K; 23-32 SB) - JR – .432/.495/.662 (11 BB/9 K; 10-13 SB) - In a weak college shortstop class, Carter Jurica should see his stock soar this spring. He has always had the right tools to succeed (plus speed, enough pop, good athlete), but has put everything together in a big way so far this season. The raw tools are there for Jurica to succeed professionally, but it’ll take a team buying in to his long-range projection if he wants to sneak up into the top ten rounds this June.
5-19 from: - http://baseballdraftreport.com/2010/05/19/2010-mlb-draft-top-30-college-shortstop-prospects/#more-1426 - Potential Starters - Kansas State JR SS Carter Jurica (.360/.448/.593 – 28/21 – 18/23) - Jurica has always had the right tools to succeed (plus speed, enough pop to keep good pitching honest, impressive athleticism), so it’s no shock to see him finally put it all together in 2010. I like him more than most, but still believe he’s a player who will need a healthy number of at bats in the low minors before figuring things out professionally.

Appears that the Giants bought into his long-range projections.

Here is a link to his college profile.   He hit .363/.444/.624/1.068 with 13 HR in 237 AB (remember, power does not usually translate to pros or majors, I've learned to my dismay).   Not sure how tough his conference is for baseball, I'm not that into college ball.  He also stole 18 bases in 23 attempts.   33 walks and only 32 strikeouts, so pretty good bat control.  I guess the Giants scouts saw more in that than Baseball America's sources.

  1. Interesting later picks:

    * Maybe third times a charm: Giants draft 6' 7" LHP Andrew Barbosa for the third time, this time in the 15th round.

    * They drafted high schooler RHP Brandon Allen, who has a scouting video, in the 18th round.

    * They drafted high schooler CF Austin Southall, who actually had a scouting video and a comment, in the 19th round. The comment isn't the best, but still, they won't comment on any old player:

"Southall didn't face the best competition this spring, so it made it a little difficult to evaluate him. He did hold his own at the East Coast Showcase last summer, a sign that he can rise to the level of better players. He has a strong arm from the outfield and has worked hard to get his body into better shape. At the plate, he has some raw power to the pull side. It might take him a while to get there, but he has the chance to be a decent big-leaguer some day."

    * The Giants selected reliever RHP Brett Bochy, yes, Bruce's boy (only 6' 2"), with the 20th pick.

  2. Brett B had Tommy John surgery a couple mos ago. So, here's hoping that he comes back with a stronger UCL next year.

  3. Perfect Game has a report on Carter Jurica:

    http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=4852

    "CARTER JURICA, ss, Kansas State

SCOUTING PROFILE: Jurica overcame a slow start to lead Kansas’ only NCAA regional team in homers (13) and RBIs (69), while batting .363. He was easily the best prospect on an otherwise blue-collar Kansas State squad, and displayed solid all-around tools, at the plate, in the field and on the bases.

Jurica has a good approach to hitting, with good plate discipline and modest power potential—his 13 homers were the fourth most in K-State history. His range and arm strength are suitable for shortstop, but might be maximized on the other side of the bag.—ALLAN SIMPSON"

That fits in with the sparse comments I can find on him, that he might be better at 2B than SS. This one at least said that he's OK at SS, so he could go either way.

I'll repeat here that the odds of ANY draftee, whether first round or any other, becoming a good player, a starter who is good, is very low, even the first pick has a success rate of under 50% from my study.

So frankly, the odds of Jurrica ever being a good player is already very low, definitely under 5%, probably in the 2-3% range, without knowing anything about him or his abilities.

Not to depress people about draftees, but that's the facts as I know them.
