ogc thoughts
Here are the ones I recall:
- Mike Ivie: from what I recall, he went fishing, caught some, and while gutting them, cut his pinkie, putting him on the DL, right when he was starting to hit to his potential.
- Roger Metzger: it was the off-season and he thought it would be great to build a doll-house for his daughter. Cut his fingers with the circular saw: the news report didn't give the full details so I have no idea how bad it was exactly.
- Jeremy Affeldt: much more recently, he was getting ready to barbecue some hamburgers, but the patties were frozen together, so he used a knife and - ooops - cut his finger. That fit right in with his litany of odd injuries, like, he was injured by his son (big guy!) jumping into his arms in a happy greeting.
- Matt Cain: now Cainer joins the pantheon of Giants players who have missed playing time because of an unfortunate finger injury. He dropped his knife and instinctively caught it, cutting his index finger. He is not expected to miss his next start, didn't even need stitches.
In this context, it's worth noting that "Metzger" is a German word for butcher.
