Bryan tied some loose ends of data together in his report. CSN's Mychael Urban reportedly, earlier this season on his KNBR show, mentioned that Pablo was enjoying some of the perks of his fame too much, with the implication that he was enjoying and partaking in the female companionship that follows star athletes. Perhaps that might be the reason work provides no escape for him, maybe he realizes his mistake now and work (and the women) are reminders that he made that mistake because of his work.
In any case, hopefully the All-Star break will help him to clear his mind some and get some closure so that he can concentrate on his baseball. Not that I'm not unsympathetic to his situation, but obviously a productive Panda in our lineup, sandwiching Huff in a Panda-Posey sandwich, would be quite a boon to our offense and would boost our chances to win the NL West title. However, given that Schulman noted that it "goes deeper than that," I fear that this could be a lost season for Pablo.

When did his personal troubles begin? I knew that something was off with him. He just stopped in May. This guy has been hitting so well since his call up in '08. He started off April so strong. I don't believe that all of a sudden pitchers then figure him out after a month. Once again thank you for these posts.
ReplyDeleteI hope the best for Pablo, even if he doesn't hit like he did last year. Though, since this has been leaked out, I can only assume that this lifts at least some weight from his shoulders. I know when I had troubles, though not to this degree, when I finally told people what was wrong, it helped a bit. However, "I had to rise above it all or drown in my own..." yeah. Maggot Brain's a fine album. But in all seriousness, you can tell that there was something different about him.
Let's hope for the best for our lovable Panda. Go Giants! And yay for the National League!
Playing this great game at the MLB level is something that most of us can only dream about. If you look past that glamour, the structure of the game is not at all conducive to maintaining relationships, let alone having a family. It's easy to forget that as these guys mature into adulthood, they inevitably marry and have families, and it's just real tough to do in that environment.

It is very hard on ballplayers and their families, and we don't always remember that they are human too and not just ballplayers, and that they pay a price in terms of the relationships that they can have. It IS very tough from what I've read and just knowing the condition of their life during the season.
Yeah Anon, it was hard to believe that the league caught up with Pablo so quickly, basically he was killing the ball in April, then hit the wall right around the end of April, start of May, and it has been up and down (mostly down), since then. The league catching up should be more gradual, as the scouts and other teams suddenly realize that he's unable to hit a certain pitch.
So the divorce is responsible for him being heavier than last season? For chasing balls in the dirt and over he head?

Good points Anon, here's one scenario on how it could have happened the way you describe the situation.
ReplyDeleteWhat do some people do when they are unhappy? They eat.
Do they exercise? Not really, they usually are wallowing in their sorrow.
Chasing pitches way out of his range? Hitting a baseball usually requires the hitters utmost attention and focus. Do you think he's focused right now? Probably not. He's probably focusing on his troubles and that extra split-micro-second that he spends thinking about his troubles while batting will slow him down, making him miss pitches he usually drives squarely.
Total speculation on my part, but since you asked. I guess you've been lucky enough not to be so emotionally overwrought by something in your life, whether it be the death of a close loved one or the loss of someone you loved. But I totally get it.
Monday 7-26-10 Pablo will be in his hometown to sign and finalize his divorce. He will not be in the lineup Sunday VS. the DBacks. You can allready see since the allstar game that his swing, and his HappyGoLucky way is back, and I promise you Giants fans it will only get better...
