And the reason why is because I've been laid off, effective at EOD tomorrow. Do the Giants need an analyst?
But the good news is I'll have more time to work on my draft study now! 😃
Honestly, though, I'm probably just going to catch up on my sleep initially. I've been having physical problems the past year or so, and it's been progressing, to the point that I've been unable to get a full night sleep, but my doctor don't know what's wrong. I think it's something to do with poor leg circulation, and sitting too much, anybody has any suggestions for exercises?
This will also give me time to work on the upcoming draft as well, as I have not been able to enjoy looking at all the mock drafts that have been coming out, and seeing who might be falling to the Giants, as work had been more hectic than usual, ironically.
And I still need to do my PQS monthly report. Anybody have any thoughts on what I should do going forward? Old version of PQS? New version? Modified version? Both old and modified? I like the change regarding strikeouts, but I feel that rewarding only 0 homers is limiting. But continuing my series using the older methodology is appealing because of the series of them I've been doing over the past decade or so. But it was such a pain creating three separate PQS data points!
Given that these "work breaks" can take longer than hoped, I'm also planning on doing some other studies on playoff success. Oddly, to me, nobody seems to study that. I get that valuing players is a key area, but given the structure of baseball, value is diffused, and you need to find a combination of factors that tie into success, which ultimately is championships. So I'll take on that challenge, once I learn to be proficient at R.
Well, I only hope I get to read some more of your columns somehow, you are one of the best sources for rea Giants news, maybe the very best, since you go into so much detail.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I appreciate your sentiments.
DeleteThat's really my philosophy and why I blog: I don't see the detail out there by many (any?) and so I publish because I want to know, and then I want to share, as well.
Unfortunately, it's a long cycle to find a job, once you get on the older side, so I will probably have a lot of spare time, and will be publishing more. Also, probably was going to publish more, anyway, it's getting more interesting with the Giants now that Mac is back, which was one factor that lead me to believe that they can get to .500 and beyond in 2019.
I don't need him hitting like Bonds (though that's be great :^) for the Giants to be above .500, but I do believe that if he can improve to be at least a steady offensive cog in LF (average NL LG hitting .783 OPS, so at least mid-700's; his career OPS is now roughly .700, so boosting by 50-100 points is not that outrageous a hope).
With 3 steady producers in the OF, plus Belt, and with Posey starting to find his touch again, with his opposite field HR the other day being a sign of him being back in his groove again, hitting .296/.350/.537/.887 in his last 17 games, and whatever Longoria, Crawford and Panik can provide, the offense should be a lot stronger.
Ugh, just found out Posey is on 7-day concussion IL, so there goes that! Hopefully Mac is up to the task of hitting well going forward, that would be a huge boost in light of Posey's absence. Garcia up to be backup, with Vogt starting, but I expect Garcia to get some starts, probably against LHP, for evaluation purposes.
Pomeranz also went on the IL. That was the fear going into the season, that he won't last. Hopefully Beede is over his jitters and can deliver a much better start reflecting his AAA resurgence, and not reflecting his poor MLB numbers so far. I believe in his talent, but sometimes players can't figure out how to translate AAA success to MLB success.
Sorry you got laid-off. I'd rather you be working and me getting less than you not working and me getting more.

DeleteThe good news is I've already been contacted by a company, and another couple of other opportunities look like a good fit with my background. So, hopefully, it's a matter of going through the interview rounds and acing them.
This year I am very worried on the quick trigger of getting rid of players who are slumping, and not giving them time to regress back close to the mean of their previous output. Problem is the entire team seemed to slump at once. I suspect many of them would get hot at the same time, unfortunately we jettison them before they get hot with us, and then they do well for a while with their new teams. I had said in the past that Pence still had very good bat speed and athleticism despite his aging. The key to him remaining a MLB player would be to tweak his swing, make it have a quicker more direct path to the ball, with less movement. He finally found a batting coach this Winter who understood the problem and worked with him. So far, as long as he continues not to regress back to his old swing, he should have a measure of success that he has not seen in quite some time. There are specific tweaks I would like to see in some of the giants hitters, including for some their general approach. But I am just an observant fan, with significant observational skills, and I will let the professionals try to do their jobs.
