Per report from Chronicle and other beat writers, Nick Hundley has been re-signed to a one-year $2.5M contract to be the Giants backup catcher again. His signing was expected as the Giants only had one other catcher on the 40-man roster (Aramis Garcia, who was recently added), plus, Hundley had a good time with the Giants and wanted to be back.

This move was extremely expected for the above reasons, this type of scenario usually automatically mean that the Giants would sign him. So why now, why not earlier, given the small amount of money (for MLB teams) to sign Hundley. The timing gives us an important clue.
Well, the Giants just cleared up payroll space with the trade of Moore, putting the team at around $15-19M before the CBT penalty threshold. Before that, the team had roughly $6-10M, and even a relatively small $2.5M signing would put them at $3.5M-7.5M, which is not enough to even dream a little on getting a good hitter somewhere, let along also upgrading the CF defense.
Now, with Moore traded, the Hundley signing leaves the Giants at around $12.5M-16.5M range, leaving a lot for the Giants to think of various options at either 3B, corner OF, or CF.
No report yet on which player gets DFAed by the Giants. The Giants were full at 40 with the drafting of Fernandez and then the swap of Moore for Wolff on the roster. So presumably, someone will get jettisoned to clear space for Hundley, as I don't believe Wolff can be placed on the 60-man day DL yet, which is another way to clear a spot.
Slania is still listed, but was reported as DFAed and placed on their AAA team afterward. Odd, I only count 39 players on their 40-man roster right now, assuming Slania is out. And one of the players who was placed on there earlier, Garcia, is not on there, though Beede, Snelton, and Herb are on there. Adding him would leave us at 40, so I'm not sure where I missed someone previously, was there somebody DFAed recently that I'm not aware of? I admit I'm not as up on the 40-man roster as I used to be, please let me know if you know who is missing.
giants get rid of Arroyo and two other minor leaguers and the Jettison Span for a 32 year old 20 homer, (hitters park) good fielding third baseman. Not sure I like the move. Tampa now could have Duffy or Arroyo at short and the other at third. I liked the idea of having Arroyo in the very near future with Pablo as the place holder. We really needed an upgrade in the outfield compared to third. This guy is about 20 million a year. We lose Span whom I think the giants severely under rated. We shall see. I just cannot see getting rid of Arroyo for an aging third baseman.
