Your 2014 Giants: 12th Rotational PQS

La Machine!

ogc thoughts

Giants got DOM starts from everyone except for Lincecum, who can't buy a good start in Cincy in his career.  DOM is up to 55.3% collectively, DIS up slightly to 19.0%.

This was the first disaster start in 5 turns of the rotation, roughly a month between disaster starts.  That is great for any pitcher, stupendous for a starting rotation overall.  DIS% has fallen from 28.6% in those turns.  Still, 19.0% is a high percentage of disaster starts, a reminder of how bad the rotation was in the early going, The first seven turns of the rotation totaled 10 disaster starts;  vs. 1 in the last five turns.

And they have been a dominating throwing machine for the past seven weeks, they have averaged 3 DOM starts per week over that period, minus the two starts puts the DOM% above 60%, which is very good for an individual pitcher, excellent from a rotation.  That is a big reason the Giants have been 17-8 over those 5 rotational turns.

DOM has been at an even higher rate in recent turns.  69% over the last 3 turns (15 games).  67% over the last 4 turns.  65% over the last 5 turns.  With just the one DIS, the averages are all near 10% or is lower.  4% over the last 25 games/5 turns.

The rotation over the past month or so appears to be back to the high standards set by the rotation from 2009 to 2012.  Hudson leads with a 70% DOM (0% DIS!) followed closely by Bumgarner with 58.3%.  The rest of the main rotation is roughly around 50% (Cain just reached it with his DOM start Friday).

Petit, our long reliever, is at 40% DOM/20% DIS right now in 5 starts.   Some teams would LOVE to get that kind of pitching from their #3/4 rotation pitchers, and we are getting this from our SIXTH starter.

So life is good right now for the Giants starting rotation.  After rough start, the rotation has been rounding into shape, and was totally dominating in May/June.  And that is with Petit starting 3 times during that period.

Cain has had a hard time, of course, getting into any good rhythm with his injuries, but Petit has been an able replacement for him when called upon to take a starting spot.   Hopefully Cain can join his fellow starters, and luckily the team has won in his absences, hopefully these skipped starts will pay off with Cain Domination starts late in the season and into the playoffs.  When he got going late in the 2013 season, he had a number of 5 PQS starts in a row to end the season.  I believe he had 7 DOM (all 5 PQS) starts out of his last 10 starts, roughly one year after his Perfect Game, his arm became alive again and returned to its former dominating goodness.

And the others are doing great while he was in and out.  Bumgarner 3 straight DOM starts, 5 of 6.  Hudson missed some games too, but as I noted above, 70% DOM for the season, nuff said!  Lincecum had 3 straight DOM starts and should have had a 4th if a blister didn't lead Bochy to take him out early when he could have gone another inning, pitch count wise.  Still, 6 DOM start out of 12, some teams would love getting that from their ace of their staff.  And Vogie, 6 DOM start out of his last 8, his velocity and stuff has returned, and there is talk that he's even better than he was in 2012, perhaps all that rest last year is paying off finally.

    1. Hey! Where were you last year! And the year before! And the year before that! This is nothing!

Thanks, been meaning to, funny you commented today, I was going to update it tonight. (I swear!) I have the BB-Ref screen up and everything. Still, GIants doing so well, almost seems besides the point.
