Woo hoo!
Edgar Renteria MVP for his superlative work: he has earned his $18.5M! Maybe he'll be willing to come back for less ($1-2M) and be back-up MI, but I doubt it. But then he could start in playoffs again after resting most of the season.
Q for Posey about a week ago: "This can't happen every year, can it?" Buster Posey: "Why Not?"
Why not indeed! As Timmy would say, "F' Yeah!"
ADDENDUM: I added this video as I thought it was appropriate when the playoffs started, and it really seems appropriate now. Again, I'll note the singer's passing resemblance for Tim Lincecum.
I am already wearing my t-shirt and cap! Sports Authority already had them for sale after the game, got there just in time to get my size, usually gone fast (NLCS was, at least).
ReplyDeleteMartin, all season long you've been stressing that solid pitching wins. Here's some WS quotes from the Star Telegram to back you up:
ReplyDeleteRanger Manager Ron Washington —"Good pitching stops hitting, and in this series their pitching certainly stood up. That was the difference right there."
Nelson Cruz — "Pitching beats hitting," said Cruz, who had the Rangers' only run on a solo homer off Lincecum in the seventh. "They have great pitching."
I'm a native San Franciscan, and it's still sinking in what the Giants winning the World Series really means. Throughout my younger years, it seemed that every year the Giants were third, behind the Big Red Machine, the Dodgers, and whoever else put it all together each year.
The 49ers went from complete losers to legendary status with Montana and Young under Bill Walsh. Now in baseball, Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and Bumgarner could indeed, as you say, make this the Giants' Decade.
Great blog, Martin. Looking forward to following the Giants with you next year.

Thanks for the quotes Steve and for the compliment. Greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteFYI: I will still be writing during the off-season, sometimes there is so much to write about, but as I noted in my latest post, there is not a lot of changes that should happen, so it could be a quiet hot stove league this season.
Yes, I see the parallels to the 49ers too. The young core. The key vets brought in. The rebuilding through the draft. And as much as I love Montana, the 49ers did not actually become good until their defense became great with Ronnie Lott leading the way, though Dwight Hicks and the Hot Licks was still a good start.
And in baseball defense is pitching and fielding.
Some have been comparing Montana with Lincecum, but I think the better comparison would be Montana with Posey, who is the quarterback for our pitching staff. Lincecum is more like Ronnie Lott, he just smashes the batters into the dirt with his pitches. Cain = Eric Williamson?
Ah, memories, that's always fun...
