The Most Expensive Week In Major League History

Hank Schulman previously noted that had the Giants instead waited just another week to bring him up, Lincecum would not have been a Super-Two this year.

That is probably the most expensive week in major league history, it will cost them anywhere from $12-24M in 2010.

    All in succession:
    Timmy call-up
    Rentarrhea signing
    Garko trade
    Sanchez trade

  4. If making any mistake is the criteria for getting rid of anybody in charge, none of us would be holding a job right now.

These comments only show the bias of the commenters. One needs to keep abreast of the big picture.

The big picture is that the Giants are set up to battle competitively for the NL West title for the near term. Sabean did that while also trying to fulfills Magowan's edict to win while we are paying Barry Bonds around $20M per season (and it is pretty clear that Magowan was the force behind signing Zito). He also did it in a relatively short time, teams don't turn around quickly once they start losing.

I only brought this up to show how fate works sometimes. No one knew at that time that Lincecum would turn out as good as he has. Giants management could have been squirrelly like the Orioles and other teams that manipulate their players service time to suit their own purposes. But they didn't, and they kept their confidence in Lincecum by not sending him down, which they could have done too.

Also, people are forgetting about the context of the situation, which is a common error. Russ Ortiz was clearly not performing well at the time of the call-up and Lincecum was clearly the one to call up at that time. Fans would have been outraged if Lincecum was passed over and another prospect was brought up over him.

It was Lincecum's time. To wait any longer would have been a disservice to him and the fans, and unfair given how poorly Ortiz was pitching. He would probably be mad at whoever it was that purposefully passed over him to bring up someone else, and the odds of you keeping Lincecum beyond his controllable years would probably be nil, given how Lincecum clearly has a chip on his shoulder against any who doubts him.

Congrats, you pissed off the first two-time Cy Young winner at the start of his career and he can't wait to get away from you. Talk about lack of accountability.
