It was reported that Tim "The Kid" Lincecum (I'm trying out a new nickname...) was shut down totally during the off-season. He didn't throw off the mound once, which explains his moptop Beatlesque (or Moe Howard) hairdo at the recent FanFest, else the hair might have gotten in his eyes while he pitched. Bochy noted research that showed that pitchers who jump to 200 IP too early in their career were susceptible to injury, so the Giants are handling "The Kid" with kid gloves so as not to take any risks with that arm. The article also noted that The Kid is "generously listed as 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds," and I had seen somewhere this off-season that he's closer to 5-foot-7.
Bravo! No need to take extra risks while losing. I am surprised but glad that they shut him down totally. Putting him out there would not have really taught him much, but could have damaged his arm. Save his arm for down the line a year or two beyond, when he is hopefully pitching in more meaningful games.
