Sabean's KNBR Show: August 2, 2007

Took these notes down on what Sabean said in his show:
  • Giants are leaning towards Misch to take Morris's spot in the rotation. He is not sure that Davis is the one who goes down, they will broach that decision when it is time to do that.
  • PTBNL: could possibly be a pitching prospect.
  • Tom Tolbert on a rage about the 100 pitch count limit, asked Sabean why that's the limit. Sabean is not sure, he feels that pitch count should depend on body type, game situation. In addition, this late in the season, since pitchers don't throw in-between starts, pitchers could then do more pitches in the game. Typically want 7 IP per 100 pitches, so Cain, for example, would rarely reach the 7th, as he's not a ground-ball pitcher, he's more popups, strikeouts, flyballs, fouls type of pitcher.
  • About Pirates motivation for the deal, Sabean diplomatically sidesteps Barbieri's insult of the Pirates GM by noting his long time in his position and Sabean respected that. First he notes that they perhaps could take on Morris's salary if they believe that the rumored trade of SS Wilson to Detroit is probably done and would free up money. (Amazingly, one rumor I read said that Detroit would send two of their top prospects for Wilson, who is all field, no hit) In addition, Sabean noted that last off-season, to get a pitcher of Morris's caliber, teams had to offer 3-4 years to obtain these pitchers, but in Morris's case, the team is only tied to him for the 2008 season but could hold him for another season at a lower rate for the 2009 season if they wished.
  • About the possibility of August trades, Sabean says that he hopes so, as he doesn't see a lot of claiming happening this season. He notes that the Giants will be very active in pursuing deals. This echoes his statement in the Morris trade press conference, when he essentially said "Come on Down, Let's Make a Deal!"
